The Blogsphere is Quiz Happy Today
Everyone is pointing to quiz sites. I keep getting suckered into looking at the quizzes, only to discover that they have too many questions for my time, but this on was simple and quick. “What kind of American English do you speak?”
I’m a linguistic mutt, born in Kentucky (mostly Southern), ages 7-19 in Pennsylvania, 20-25 back in Kentucky and the past 20+ years in the Bay Area. I’d be more Southern if instead of making me choose between soda and pop for what I called fizzy beverages, they had listed coke as an option. As a kid, we called them all cokes.
“Can I get you a Coke.”
“Yes, please, I’ll have a 7-Up.”
I still think of them all as Cokes, although when I drink one, I usually grab a Pepsi.

In California we call it a “soft drink”.
Have you seen Rob MacNeil’s Do you Speak American? He spends a good segment in Kentucky. He also divides Texas into about three different dialects, then goes west to California and does a number on us. I highly recommended it, lots of fun to watch
